Medtronic's VenaSeal Closure System Receives New CPT Codes

November 13, 2017—Medtronic has advised that their VenaSeal closure system received a favorable new CPT code as a level 4 vascular procedure as part of the calendar year 2018 Medicare Physician Fee Schedule and Hospital Outpatient Prospective Payment and Ambulatory Surgical Center Payment Systems final rules issued by the US Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services. In addition, radiofrequency and laser ablation were reassigned to level 3 vascular procedures.

Medtronic noted that there is no national coverage decision for endovenous procedures in the United States. Although there are new codes, Medicare, Medicaid, and commercial payers do not currently have positive coverage for VenaSeal. Medtronic has been working to pursue payer coverage and will continue to provide updates in the future as the company works with regional Medicare administrative contractors and private payers to obtain that coverage.

These new CPT codes will take effect on January 1, 2018.
