Pioneering Interventional Radiologist João Martins Pisco Has Passed Away

March 28, 2019—The global interventional radiology community is deeply saddened by the sudden passing of João Martins Pisco, MD, PhD, of Lisbon, Portugal on March 26, 2019.

Known around the world for his work in developing, researching, and training colleagues in prostate artery embolization, Prof. Pisco passed away while attending the annual meeting of the Society of Interventional Radiology (SIR) in Austin, Texas.

Addressing attendees on Wednesday morning, SIR President Laura Findeiss, MD, informed the community of his death and honored his contributions to the field.

"Prof. Pisco was a world-renowned expert and pioneer of prostate artery embolization—a treatment that has helped men around the world live better lives," said Dr. Findeiss. "His groundbreaking work in this area earned him many accolades throughout the years."

Dr. Findeiss recalled that Prof. Pisco's PAE studies were honored as an “Abstract of the Year” at the 2017 SIR meeting and as a “Distinguished Abstract” in 2013 and 2015. He also earned Journal of Vascular and Interventional Radiology (JVIR) research awards, including the Editor's Award for Outstanding Clinical Research Paper of 2011. Prior to his passing, Prof. Pisco was awarded as a JVIR Editor's Honoree by Editor-in-Chief Ziv J. Haskal, MD during SIR 2019.

"Prof. Pisco was beloved among his colleagues and friends of SIR for his warm and generous spirit and his boundless curiosity," said Dr. Findeiss. "Although himself the author of countless papers and studies, he was also an eager student, always innovating and finding new ways to achieve better outcomes for his patients. He inspired generations of interventional radiologists around the world through his work. SIR and SIR Foundation are grateful to Prof. Pisco for his ingenuity and hard work to advance the specialty. As an IR community, we are indebted to generations of friends and colleagues: it’s because of them that we are all here today."

Endovascular Today sends condolences to the family and friends of Prof. Pisco, whom we will remember as an innovative and compassionate physician-scientist and a kind presence in the interventional community.
