Acandis Aperio 1.9-F Thrombectomy System Approved in Europe for Stroke Treatment

October 16, 2012—Acandis GmbH & Co. KG (Pforzheim, Germany) announced CE Mark approval of the company's Aperio 1.9-F thrombectomy system. It is a next-generation, low-profile, self-expanding clot-retrieval system designed to treat patients experiencing an ischemic stroke. The company plans to launch the product in Germany and other CE Mark countries during the fourth quarter of 2012.

According to the company's press release, the Aperio 1.9-F system is available as a set with the Acandis 1.9-F microcatheter, which together can be used to remove blood clots and restore blood flow in the brain vessels. The Aperio's sizes are compatible with vessel diameters of 2 to 4 mm. It is suitable for all of the cerebral main vessels, including more distal and difficult-to-reach vessels. The reduced profile design increases the lumen available for aspiration through the guiding catheter. Accurate positioning is facilitated by radiopaque transport wire markers and three low-profile gold markers at the distal device end for visualization. Additionally, the hybrid cell design of the laser-cut nitinol device catches the clot effectively and supports reliable clot removal and rapid flow restoration. Finally, the Aperio 1.9-F thrombectomy system can be used up to three times based on the severity of the clot, stated Acandis.
