AngioDynamics Launches VenaCure 1470-nm Laser to Treat Varicose Veins
May 31, 2011—AngioDynamics, Inc. (Queensbury, NY) announced the expansion of its VenaCure EVLT (endovenous laser treatment) system product line with the global launch of the VenaCure 1470-nm laser to treat varicose veins with greater energy efficiency. The device has received 510(k) clearance in the United States and CE Mark approval in the Europe.
According to the company, the VenaCure 1470-nm laser's light energy is delivered through the NeverTouch gold-tip fiber and is more readily absorbed by the water in the blood and endothelial lining than is the case with other wavelengths. The NeverTouch fiber's jacketed tip is designed to maximize efficacy, to minimize postoperative pain and bruising, and to virtually eliminate the risk of direct contact between the laser fiber and vein wall.
“Our research group performed a carefully controlled clinical trial using the new VenaCure 1470 laser coupled with the NeverTouch fiber from AngioDynamics,” commented Jose I. Almeida, MD. In addition to his medical practice at the Miami Vein Center, Dr. Almeida is Managing Partner of Vascular Device Partners, LLC (Miami, FL), which works with industry in the clinical investigations of new products. “We found excellent vein closure rates, minimal postoperative discomfort and bruising, and a clear reduction in symptom severity over the follow-up period. By allowing for the more efficient transfer of energy to the vein, this new long wavelength laser translated into improved clinical outcomes as compared to short wavelength lasers we have studied.”
