Cook Initiates European Study of Zenith TX2 TAA Graft
May 12, 2010—Cook Medical (Bloomington, IN) announced the commencement of its European clinical investigation of the Zenith TX2 low-profile thoracic aortic aneurysm (TAA) graft, with the first implants of the device performed by Professor Piotr Kasprzak, MD, at the University Hospital Regensburg, Germany. One patient was treated for a TAA measuring approximately 10 cm in diameter, and the other patient was treated for an ulcer that was notable for narrow access vessel anatomy (measuring approximately 5 mm in diameter). Up to 10 medical centers in Europe may take part in the TX2 low-profile TAA study.
According to Cook, at 16- and 18-F sizes, the TX2 low-profile delivery system is smaller than a standard TX2 device and is engineered to allow patients with challenging anatomies to be treated percutaneously. As a result, patients such as those with narrowed, small, or tortuous arteries, who previously may not have been suited for thoracic endovascular repair, may now benefit from minimally invasive treatment.
