FastWave Medical Provides Update on Laser-IVL Technology

April 16, 2024—FastWave Medical, a prerevenue medical device company, announced further developments for its preclinical intravascular lithotripsy (IVL) technology that aims to address challenges associated with treating calcified arteries in patients with occlusive vascular disease. The company announced it has been issued its fourth utility patent by the United States Patent and Trademark Office, which strengthens FastWave’s intellectual property foundation to advance its next-generation laser-IVL platform.

FastWave’s peripheral IVL platform is designed to fracture calcium deposits using a low-profile, rupture-resistant balloon that generates circumferential ultrasonic pressure. The technology offers durable and fast energy delivery, enhanced sonic output, and a high-performing catheter to navigate complex arterial anatomy.

The news follows the company’s March 2024 announcement of the issuance of the third utility patent by the United States Patent and Trademark Office. In January 2024, FastWave announced the completion of enrollment for the first-in-human (FIH) study of the company’s peripheral IVL technology. The prospective single-arm FIH study is assessing the safety and performance of the FastWave IVL system in patients with peripheral arterial disease of the superficial femoral or popliteal arteries with moderate to severe calcium.
