FDA Seeks Medical Officer to Evaluate Cardiovascular Devices

August 28, 2026—The United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is recruiting a vascular surgeon to serve as a medical officer in the Office of Cardiovascular Devices of the FDA’s Center for Devices and Radiological Health. Positions are based at the FDA’s headquarters in Silver Spring, Maryland, near Washington, DC, or remote contract positions.

According to the FDA, the agency’s medical officers work together with engineers, statisticians, and other scientists to evaluate the safety and effectiveness of medical devices for their intended use and make the regulatory decisions that determine whether these devices can be made available to physicians and patients, either in clinical trials or via marketing approval.

In this position, the medical officer would be working on projects involving the full range of surgical and transcatheter devices used in vascular surgery.

Duties include reviewing proposed clinical trial protocols to ensure that trials are capable of collecting valid scientific evidence while sufficiently protecting patient safety; analyzing the results of clinical trials to determine whether they support the safety and effectiveness of a given product; development of scientifically sound clinical review policy for vascular surgery devices; and outreach to device manufacturers and physician groups on clinical topics.

Candidates should be United States citizens who possess a medical degree from an accredited institution in the United States. Additionally, candidates should have completed residency/fellowship training and possess excellent critical thinking and communication skills. Postresidency clinical practice and experience designing, analyzing, or participating in clinical trials are also desirable.

The FDA advised that it is interested in filling the position as soon as possible; however, there is no deadline for applying, and the starting date is flexible. Vascular surgeons who are interested in a part-time position (while continuing their current clinical responsibilities) who can commit ≥ 20 hours a week working remotely are strongly encouraged to apply.
