Gore Honors 2014 Pioneers in Performance for Europe
April 24, 2014—Gore & Associates (Flagstaff, AZ) announced the honorees of the 2014 Pioneers in Performance awards for Europe. The biennial award acknowledges exceptional work in the field of vascular and endovascular therapy, including aortic and lower-limb bypass and dialysis access surgery. The nominees were selected by past award recipients, and the broader medical community chose who to award through popular vote on www.pioneersinperformance.com.
The 2014 Pioneers in Performance are given in four categories that correspond with different aspects of clinical collaboration.
Krassi Ivancev, MD, PhD, was recognized for commitment to ongoing learning. Dr. Ivancev is Professor and Head of the Complex Endovascular Aneurysm Treatment Team at The Royal Free Hospital in London, United Kingdom.
Dierk Vorwerk, MD, was awarded for dedication to sharing knowledge with peers and patients. Dr. Vorwerk is Chairman of the Department of Diagnostic and Interventional Radiology at Ingolstadt Hospital in Ingolstadt, Germany.
Fabrizio Fanelli, MD, was honored for dedication to creating consensus within the medical community. Dr. Fanelli is Professor of Interventional Radiology at the University of Rome La Sapienza in Rome, Italy.
Jim A. Reekers, MD, was named a Pioneer in Performance for dedication to analysis of clinical outcomes. Dr. Reekers is Professor of Interventional Radiology at the Academic Medical Center in Amsterdam, The Netherlands.
The winners were feted at a special celebration during the 36th Charing Cross International Symposium that was held on April 5–8, 2014 in London, United Kingdom. Professor Roger Greenhalgh, MD, is Chairman of the Charing Cross symposium and a past recipient of the award.
“Pioneers in Performance celebrates the incredible achievements made by proven leaders in our field by honoring their dedication to excellence through innovation, critical thinking, education, research, and collaboration,” Prof. Greenhalgh said in the Gore press release. “This year’s honorees exemplify what it means to be a true pioneer in the pursuit to advance open and endovascular surgery and improve patient outcomes.” Prof. Greenhalgh is Emeritus Professor of Surgery and Head of Imperial College London Vascular Research Group.
David Abeyta, Leader of the Gore Medical Products Division, added, “Since the Pioneers in Performance program began, physicians from all over the world have been given the opportunity to honor the extraordinary achievements of their peers and this year is no different. We congratulate this latest group of European-based honorees and thank them, and their fellow nominees, for their unrelenting dedication to advancing vascular and endovascular therapy for their patients and their peers.”

Confidential voting closes in October 2014 and final winners will be honored during a reception in November at the 2014 VEITH symposium.
