Initial Procedure Conducted With Hansen Medical's 10-F Robotic Catheter
May 14, 2015—Hansen Medical, Inc. announced the completion of the first clinical procedure with the Magellan 10-F robotic catheter, which recently received European CE Mark approval for use in the peripheral vasculature. Interventional radiologist Gerard Goh, MD, performed the procedure at the Alfred Hospital in Melbourne, Australia. Dr. Goh used the 10-F catheter during robot-assisted placement of an inferior vena cava (IVC) filter. In Australia and New Zealand, the Magellan robotic system is distributed exclusively by Medtel Pty Limited.
As the latest addition to the company’s family of robotic catheters used with its Magellan robotic system, the 10-F device allows for independent, robotic control of two telescoping catheters (an outer guide and an inner leader catheter). The guide catheter has a 10-F outer diameter and a 7-F inner lumen to enable delivery of therapeutic devices through the robotic catheter.
In Hansen Medical’s press release, Dr. Goh commented, “The Magellan 10-F robotic catheter will enable us to expand our use of intravascular robotics in minimally invasive endovascular procedures. The larger, 7-F inner lumen accommodates many more therapeutic devices, including stents, balloons, and in this case, an IVC filter. The device tracked well through the catheter, and we were able to benefit from the robotic precision and stability that we have experienced during previous therapy delivery with the Magellan 6-F and 9-F catheters.”
Hansen Medical's Magellan robotic system is intended to be used to facilitate navigation in the peripheral vasculature and subsequently provide a conduit for manual placement of therapeutic devices. Magellan’s remote workstation allows physicians to control robotic catheters and guidewires while seated away from the radiation field, which has been shown to reduce radiation exposure for the physician by as much as 95% in complex endovascular procedures, stated the company.
