Lower Extremity PAD Addressed in AHA Scientific Statement
July 28, 2021—The American Heart Association (AHA) announced that an AHA scientific statement entitled ”Lower Extremity Peripheral Artery Disease: Contemporary Epidemiology, Management Gaps, and Future Directions” was published by Michael H. Criqui, MD, et al online in Circulation.
According to the AHA, the scientific statement provides an update for health care professionals regarding contemporary epidemiology of PAD (ie, prevalence, temporal trends, risk factors, complications), the current status of diagnosis (ie, physiological tests, imaging modalities), and major gaps in the management of PAD (ie, medications, exercise therapy, revascularization).
The AHA summary advised that health care professionals, researchers, expert organizations, health care organizations, government agencies, industry, and the community should collaborate to increase the awareness and understanding of PAD and improve the quality of PAD diagnosis, management, and prognosis.
Lower extremity PAD affects > 230 million adults worldwide and is associated with an increased risk of various adverse clinical outcomes (ie, cardiovascular diseases such as coronary heart disease and stroke and leg outcomes such as amputation), noted the AHA in its summary announcing the publication.
