Medtronic Appoints Omar Ishrak as Chairman and CEO
May 11, 2011—Medtronic, Inc. (Minneapolis, MN) announced that its board of directors has named Omar Ishrak, PhD, the company's new chairman and chief executive officer, effective June 13, 2011. He succeeds William A. Hawkins, who announced his intention to retire from the company in December 2010.
According to Medtronic, Dr. Ishrak formerly served as president and chief executive officer of GE Healthcare Technologies (Waukesha, WI), a $12 billion division of GE Healthcare supported by approximately 20,000 employees in 120 countries. He was also a senior vice president of GE Corporation and a member of the GE Corporate Executive Council.
Before joining GE Healthcare in 1995, Dr. Ishrak spent more than 13 years in senior technology development and business management roles at Philips Ultrasound (Philips Healthcare, Andover, MA), Diasonics Inc. (Toshiba America Medical Systems, Inc., Tustin, CA), and Elbit Ultrasound Group (Elbit Imaging Ltd, Tel Aviv, Israel). He earned a Bachelor of Science degree and a PhD in electrical engineering from the University of London, King's College. He is a member of the board at The Blood Center of Wisconsin and is on the Health Leadership Council of the Save the Children Foundation, stated Medtronic.
