Medtronic’s ClosureFast 6-F RFA Catheter Cleared and Launched to Treat CVI
August 28, 2023—Medtronic announced that an updated ClosureFast radiofrequency ablation (RFA) catheter in a lower 6-F profile received FDA 510(k) clearance and is now available in the United States.
According to the company, the ClosureFast procedure is intended to treat chronic venous insufficiency (CVI) by using radiofrequency ablation to close the diseased vein, which redirects blood flow to healthy veins to relieve symptoms.
New features in the updated ClosureFast RFA catheter include:
- A lower profile 6-F catheter that is designed for better flexibility, easier navigation, and greater kink resistance
- Increased length of the heating element (from 7 to 8 cm) for greater procedural efficiency
“For patients with mild tortuosity in their saphenous veins, where I would normally use a wire or two access points, I’ve found that the new ClosureFast 6-F system glides through more easily than the 7-F system, providing a better periprocedural experience for the patient,” commented Dr. Misaki Kiguchi, MD, in Medtronic’s press release. Dr. Kiguchi is a vascular surgeon at MedStar Heart and Vascular Institute in Washington, DC.
