Medtronic’s FlowMet Peripheral Blood Flow Monitoring System With a Disposable Sensor Now Available in United States

July 30, 2021—Medtronic announced that the FlowMet peripheral blood flow monitoring system with a disposable sensor is now available in the United States.

According to the company, FlowMet is a noninvasive device that provides continuous blood flow measurements during procedures to treat peripheral artery disease, supplementing angiography to support procedural insights. The disposable sensor is attached to a patient’s toe and is simple and easy to use.

As an additive to angiography, the FlowMet system delivers real-time procedural insight to quantify and characterize a patient’s blood flow without disrupting clinic workflow, stated Medtronic.

“The FlowMet system offers a completely new way to measure blood flow during a lower extremity revascularization,” commented Peter Monteleone, MD, in Medtronic’s announcement. “This device is designed to quantify and characterize real-time changes in blood flow while operating. Having a new way to continuously assess changes in blood flow status, which supplements angiography and does not interrupt my procedural workflow, provides another point of reference when treating my patients.” Dr. Monteleone is Director of Ascension Texas Cardiac Catheterization Laboratories in Austin, Texas.

FDA clearance of the new FlowMet system with the disposable system was received in January 2020. Medtronic acquired the device’s developer, Laser Associated Sciences, in March 2020.
