Merit Medical Introduces Siege Vascular Plug and Bearing nsPVA Express Prefilled Syringe
May 17, 2024—Merit Medical Systems, Inc. recently announced FDA 510(k) clearance for its Siege vascular plug. The company also announced the launch of its Bearing nsPVA Express prefilled syringe in the United States and Australia. Merit introduced the devices at GEST, the 18th annual Global Embolization Oncology Symposium Technologies meeting held May 16-19, 2024, in New York, New York.
These new devices from Merit Medical’s embolics portfolio complement its offering of microsphere, particle, and gelatin foam products that are supported by a range of microcatheters, guidewires, and other enabling devices.
According to the company, the nitinol, self-expanding Siege vascular plug is designed to be highly deliverable and recapturable to enable precise placement while achieving vessel occlusion within 1.3 minutes. Siege is available in three sizes to treat peripheral arteries from 1.5 to 6.0 mm in diameter. All sizes are delivered with a microcatheter.
“The Siege vascular plug will be a valuable addition to my clinical practice,” commented Gary Siskin, MD, in the company’s press release. “A plug with rapid occlusion, precise placement, and microcatheter compatibility is important to me.” Dr. Siskin is Professor and Chairman of the Radiology Department at Albany Medical Center in Albany, New York.
The Bearing nsPVA Express is a 20-mL, vacuum-sealed syringe prefilled with Merit-manufactured Bearing nsPVA embolization particles. The small, irregularly shaped, biocompatible, hydrophilic, and nonresorbable particles are available in multiple sizes from 45 to 1180 µm.
“Bearing nsPVA Express streamlines embolization procedures,” stated interventional radiologist Jafar Golzarian, MD, in Merit’s press release. “It eliminates a number of steps involved in using PVA (polyvinyl alcohol) in a vial. Unlike vial products, it’s ready to use, enabling interventional radiologists to focus on the procedure.” Dr. Golzarian is Founder at Northstar Vascular and Interventional in Golden Valley, Minnesota.
