Merit Medical Systems Acquires Distal Access's Spinr Platform
July 15, 2015—Distal Access, LLC announced that it sold the rights to its Spinr platform for peripheral vascular, coronary vascular, and endoscopic use to Merit Medical System, Inc.’s NRI Limited based in Dublin, Ireland. The terms of the transaction were not announced.
According to Distal Access, the Spinr high-performance guidewire controller is designed to improve guidewire control, torque, and performance. The Spinr macerator is a simple and cost-effective way to macerate thrombus. The Spinr device has both issued and pending United States and international patents.
In February 2015, Distal Access announced US Food and Drug Administration clearance for the Spinr high-performance guidewire controller to maneuver guidewires in the coronary and peripheral vasculature during interventional and diagnostic procedures. Spinr macerators are under development and are not approved for use in the United States at this time, advised the company.
