Micrus Endovascular's DeltaPaq and DeltaPlush Microcoils Approved in Japan
June 17, 2010—Micrus Endovascular Corporation (San Jose, CA) announced that the Japanese Ministry of Health, Labor, and Welfare has granted Shonin approval to market the company's bare platinum and Cerecyte DeltaPaq filling and DeltaPlush finishing microcoils for treatment of cerebral aneurysms and treatments in the peripheral vasculature. The company stated that the devices feature Micrus's Delta Wind technology, which is designed to achieve greater intra-aneurysmal packing density than conventional microcoils. Micrus Endovascular's exclusive distributor in the Japanese market, Goodman Co., Ltd. (Nagoya, Japan), will manage sales of DeltaPaq and DeltaPlush microcoils in that country.
According to Micrus, the Delta Wind technology changes the shape of the microcoil primary wind, allowing the coil to easily change direction and to find and fill open spaces within the cerebral aneurysm that might be missed by traditional coils. The DeltaPaq microcoil is designed to enable greater coil packing density, which may reduce the rate of recanalization and the need for retreatment. The DeltaPlush microcoil incorporates Micrus's soft platinum wire to provide added flexibility to find and fill gaps, helping to provide superior finishing at the aneurysm neck, the company stated.
