Pathfinder Medical Secures Funding to Support Development of Endovascular AVF Device

January 19, 2022—Pathfinder Medical announced it has secured an UK£8.5 million funding round that will be used to support additional preclinical work, complete a pivotal trial in patients, and secure regulatory approval of the company’s technology to guide and accurately align catheters in endovascular procedures. The company is based in London, United Kingdom.

According to the company, the key application of the Pathfinder technology is in the dialysis field. The Pathfinder device enables an endovascular approach to create an arteriovenous fistula (AVF). The approach helps avoid surgical trauma thereby improving the outcomes for patients with kidney failure while also generating cost saving.

Pathfinder was cofounded in 2014 by Robert Dickinson and Chief Executive Officer Sorin Popa after the latter’s research at Imperial College London, United Kingdom, into the use of electric fields for guidance in medical device procedures. To date, the business has received more than UK£6 million of funding from investors including Deepbridge, a consortium of angels and specialist grant funders.

The latest funding round was led by investors BGF and Parkwalk, joined by industry insiders, and with support from existing investor Deepbridge Capital.

Additionally, the company stated that Chas Taylor, who is a serial entrepreneur in the medical device industry, will be joining the Pathfinder Medical’s board as Chairman. Mr. Taylor founded and exited three companies in the vascular space: MedNova, Novate, and Veryan.

Stefano Ciampolini will join the board as Non-Executive Director. Mr. Ciampolini founded and successfully exited several companies in the dialysis and renal care sector including Renal Services, a dialysis company in the United Kingdom.
