Penumbra Launches 150-cm Catheter Length for Lightning Bolt 6X With Trax

September 10, 2025—Penumbra announced that a 150-cm catheter length is now available for the company’s Lightning Bolt 6X with Trax computer-assisted vacuum thrombectomy (CAVT) technology. The new length is intended to let the device reach and remove thrombus in more distal arteries below the knee.

The system includes Trax, the company’s first arterial-designed dilator, engineered for precise vessel selection. The CAT6X 150-cm catheter combines advanced coil-wound technology with an enhanced hydrophilic coating, designed for improved trackability through complex anatomy.

In January 2025, Penumbra announced the launch of the Lightning Bolt 6X with the Trax system to provide modulated aspiration to rapidly restore flow. The system is engineered for single-session arterial thrombus extraction, and it allows physicians to reach and treat smaller vessels, stated the company.

Visharad Patel, DO, at Wellstar North Fulton Hospital in Roswell, Georgia, commented on the device in the company’s press release.

“Lightning Bolt 6X with Trax has been highly effective in addressing smaller embolized fragments in the anterior tibial artery,” stated Dr. Patel. “We have been impressed with its ability to navigate complex anatomy while delivering rapid results. The combination of versatility, speed, and results has made CAVT my practice’s frontline option of choice.”
