Penumbra Launches Element Vascular Access System for VTE
January 29, 2025—Penumbra announced that it has launched the Element vascular access system, a laser-cut hypotube sheath designed for treating venous thromboembolism (VTE).
The Element system is compatible with the Lightning Flash 2.0 mechanical thrombectomy system for the removal of venous thrombus and the treatment of pulmonary embolism. The Element device effectively completes Penumbra’s VTE platform, noted the company.
“The flexibility and torqueability of the Lightning Flash 2.0 catheter paired with the foundational support of the Element sheath has allowed us excellent angiographic and clinical success,” commented Raj Kakarla, MD, in the company’s press release.
Dr. Kakarla, an interventional radiologist at Javon Bea Hospital in Rockford, Illinois, continued, “Penumbra’s continuous advancements provide a comprehensive portfolio for physicians to treat a wider range of patients and improve patient outcomes.”
According to Penumbra, the Element system features the HemoLock valve system, which is designed to ensure hemostasis through dual-valve engineering. It has a rotating hemostatic valve and a removable cross-cut valve that provide physicians with precise control during procedures.
Penumbra further explained that the Element laser-cut hypotube design is engineered to maintain stepwise support throughout vasculature to enhance performance across challenging anatomies. The atraumatic tip design helps enable smooth delivery and trackability. The proximal segment is engineered to deliver foundational support, while its polymer transitions help maintain sheath access without the application of proximal hydrophilic coatings.
The Element hypotube is composed of 17-F MaxID technology, tailor-made for use in conjunction with the Lightning Flash 2.0, CAT16 catheter. This technology enables in-case visualization via hand injection around the CAT16 and provides sufficient space to torque CAT16, stated the company.
