Penumbra Launches Lightning Flash 3.0 CAVT System to Treat VTE
January 26, 2026—Penumbra announced the launch of the Lightning Flash 3.0 computer assisted vacuum thrombectomy (CAVT) system for the treatment of venous thromboembolism (VTE).
According to the company, the device is engineered for the rapid removal of pulmonary and venous thrombus. The Flash 3.0 algorithm is designed for enhanced clot detection capabilities with increased sensitivity to thrombus and blood. Lightning Flash 3.0 includes enlarged tubing coupled with an automated backflush feature tailored for large thrombus burdens and to reduce friction from aspirated thrombus.
Improvements incorporated in the Lightning Flash 3.0 CAVT system provide 1.3 times faster clot removal time, 60% fluid savings, and an upgraded user interface with streamlined audio-visual feedback, including a visual display with vacuum and flow indicators, stated Penumbra.
The company also reported that the STORM-PE randomized controlled trial found that the use of Penumbra’s CAVT technology with anticoagulation achieved superior reduction in right heart strain compared to anticoagulation therapy alone in patients with acute intermediate–high-risk pulmonary embolism (PE). The STORM-PE findings were published in Circulation by Robert A. Lookstein, MD, et al. Additionally, data from STORM-PE were presented at the VIVA 2025 conference and at the TCT 2025 scientific symposium. This Level 1 evidence demonstrated superior results for mechanical thrombectomy over traditional anticoagulation for the treatment of PE, noted Penumbra.
