Penumbra Launches POD Embolization Anchoring Device at SIR

February 27, 2015—Penumbra, Inc. announced the launch of the POD (peripheral occlusion device), which is a vessel occlusion tool for vascular embolization, at SIR 2015, the Society of Interventional Radiology’s 40th annual scientific meeting, held February 28 to March 5 at the Georgia World Congress Center in Atlanta, Georgia. Penumbra also announced the presentation of results from two clinical trials featuring Penumbra technology at the meeting.

The company stated that the POD, which is designed to be delivered through a high-flow microcatheter, permits the physician to mechanically occlude distal vessels. The POD’s anchor technology enables precise placement of the device at the target location. The device quickly transitions to a soft packing segment to create a stable dense occlusion. Once the desired positioning is achieved, accurate, instant detachment ensures physician control.

The two clinical trials featuring Penumbra technology presented at the SIR meeting were the ACE (Aneurysm Coiling Efficiency) study analyzing the benefit of high packing density on the long-term outcome of peripheral embolization with the company’s Ruby coil and the multicenter results of the PRISM acute limb ischemia revascularization study using the Indigo thromboembolectomy system. Corey Teigen, MD, with Sanford Health Fargo in North Dakota, presented data on the Ruby Coil from the ACE trial, and James Benenati, MD, with Baptist Cardiac & Vascular Institute in Miami, Florida, presented data on the Indigo system from the PRISM trial.
