Penumbra's Lantern Microcatheter and POD Packing Coil Launched in Europe
November 10, 2016—Penumbra, Inc. announced the European launch of the Lantern microcatheter and the Penumbra Occlusion Device (POD) packing coil at CIRSE 2016, the annual meeting of the Cardiovascular and Interventional Radiology Society of Europe, which was held September 10–14 in Barcelona, Spain. The devices received European CE Mark approval in Spring 2016.
The POD packing coil is the newest addition to Penumbra’s embolization portfolio. The company stated that it is intended to simplify vessel embolization when used as a complementary device with Penumbra's Ruby and POD embolization products. It is designed to pack very densely behind the Ruby and POD or any other device to occlude arteries and veins throughout the peripheral vasculature.
Penumbra's Lantern is a low-profile, high-flow microcatheter optimized specifically to assist in the delivery of the Ruby coil, POD device, and POD packing coil to the peripheral vasculature. Lantern is offered in a variety of lengths and tip shapes relevant to peripheral vascular procedures. Lantern’s distal segment is visible under fluoroscopy to aid in the navigation and visualization of the microcatheter during procedures, noted the company.
Penumbra advised that Aaron Fischman, MD, of Mount Sinai Medical Center in New York, New York, will offer a podium presentation on the use of the Lantern, Ruby coil, and POD coil devices for vascular embolization. The presentation will take place on November 17 at 5:14 pm in the Grand Ballroom West at the 2016 VEITHsymposium, to be held November 15–19 at New York Hilton Midtown in New York City. The devices will also be featured at a company-hosted lunch symposium and hands-on workshops during the conference.
In the United States, the Lantern microcatheter received 510(k) clearance from the US Food and Drug Administration in December 2015. The company announced the launch of the device at the SIR 2016, the Society for Interventional Radiology's annual meeting, which was held on April 2–7 in Vancouver, British Columbia. Penumbra announced the United States launch of the POD packing coil in January 2016.
