Penumbra Launches Lightning Flash Mechanical Thrombectomy System After FDA Clearance
January 10, 2023—Penumbra, Inc. announced the FDA clearance and launch of the company’s Lightning Flash mechanical thrombectomy system.
According to Penumbra, Lightning Flash features the company’s Lightning intelligent aspiration technology, which now includes dual clot detection algorithms. The device is designed to quickly remove large blood clots in the body, including venous thrombus and pulmonary emboli.
Lightning Flash, which is powered by the Penumbra Engine, uses both pressure and flow-based algorithms to detect blood clot and blood flow. The Lightning Flash catheter is made with MaxID hypotube technology, allowing an inner diameter similar to large-bore catheters while maintaining a lower profile. A soft, atraumatic tip is designed to help navigate the complex and delicate anatomy of the body.
The company noted that Lightning Flash is part of Penumbra’s Indigo system with Lightning portfolio. Lightning computer-aided mechanical thrombectomy systems have shown improvement in clinical outcomes and quality of life in early data from the STRIKE-PE study, which were presented by Ido Weinberg, MD, at the VIVA22 conference held by the VIVA Foundation.
