Professor Roger M. Greenhalgh, MD, 1941–2023

The Charing Cross (CX) International Symposium announced the passing of its founder, Professor Roger Greenhalgh, MD, Emeritus Professor of Surgery at Imperial College in London, and head of the Vascular Surgery Research Group. Prof. Greenhalgh passed peacefully on October 6, 2023, at the age of 82.

A globally respected vascular surgeon, researcher, and pioneer in medical education and media, Prof. Greenhalgh served as host to countless faculty and attendees from around the world as Chairman of the CX Symposium. Along with his son, Stephen, he also founded BIBA Publishing, producer of Vascular News and Interventional News, among other titles.

Prof. Greenhalgh led a diverse array of clinical research efforts, including landmark randomized trials of endovascular aortic aneurysm repair. Throughout his career, he has been lauded for his mentorship and training of juniors, his leadership across numerous vascular societies, and his efforts to study and disseminate vascular surgical and interventional advancements.

Working with CX course directors, moderators, and staff, Prof. Greenhalgh perennially set an ambitious and timely agenda, with his first meeting held in 1978 at Charing Cross Hospital and the 2024 sessions set for London’s Excel Centre. As seen by attendees each April in London over the past several decades, “The Prof” enjoyed posing provocative questions to invited speakers and panelists, even calling on experts from the audience for impromptu perspectives and counterpoints. His unique blend of expertise, wit, and respect for his speakers and the audience were on display this past April as he deftly moderated an in-depth session on the much-anticipated BASIL-2 trial.

During the 2023 CX Symposium, the organizers announced the appointment of Cochairs Professor Dittmar Böckler, MD; Professor Andrew Holden, MBChB; and Erin Murphy, MD. CX notes that Prof. Greenhalgh personally nominated the cochairs to lead the symposium and honor the style of education he established.

Prof. Greenhalgh’s life and accomplishments are celebrated in an obituary in Vascular News, as well as an online book of condolence where friends and colleagues are invited to post their memories and photos.

The Endovascular Today staff sends our heartfelt condolences to the Greenhalgh family and to our friends and colleagues at BIBA Medical. We are grateful for Prof. Greenhalgh's hospitality and collegiality over the years and will miss his presence at the podium in those to come.
