Rampart IC Collaborates With Boston Scientific on Radiation Safety and Orthopedic Protection

February 22, 2023—Rampart IC, a Birmingham, Alabama–based medical device company specializing in radiation shielding and orthopedic protection, announced a collaborative agreement with Boston Scientific Corporation to expand access to and promote the importance of radiation safety and orthopedic protection solutions to medical professionals. The companies will work together on sales program offerings for physicians who could benefit from the Rampart shielding technology.

According to the company, the Rampart M1128 radiation shielding solution is a fully adjustable and portable system equipped with radiation-attenuating panels that have 1-mm lead equivalency, creating a wide shielding area to protect the physician and surrounding medical personnel. The electric device allows for subtle positioning to suit the body shape of the patient.

The Rampart IC radiation shielding solution system is available in the United States, where the company handles direct sales. Additionally, Rampart IC has distribution agreements in the Middle East, Asia, Europe, and North America.

Rampart IC also has agreements to sell and distribute products in the United States for Fluke Corporation and Mavig GmbH, a provider of personal protective equipment used in hospitals and medical practices.

The company noted that interventional cardiologists rank as the occupation with the highest level of radiation exposure. These physicians often face debilitating injuries resulting from the 20- to 30-lb lead aprons traditionally worn to reduce radiation exposure, with approximately half reporting some form of orthopedic injury.

Rampart IC Founder and Chief Medical Officer, Bob Foster, MD, commented in the company’s press release, “I’m very excited about the next generation of operators who are going to be able to work in a better environment both from an orthopedic and radiation standpoint. The 100-year-old solution of heavy aprons will soon become obsolete. Rampart will allow operators to perform at their best by addressing the challenges of wearing heavy lead and minimizing radiation exposure.”

Tom Livingston, Rampart IC President and CEO, added, “We are honored to work with Boston Scientific, a global medical technology leader, to address a significant unmet need through the protection of more cath lab professionals from harmful radiation exposure. This collaboration will strengthen our mission to increase access to the Rampart solution for those who are on the front lines performing interventional procedures requiring fluoroscopy.”
