Rapid Medical’s Numen Coil Used in First Procedures in United States
June 28, 2022—Rapid Medical, an Israel-based developer of advanced neurovascular devices, announced the first Numen coil embolization procedure and the expansion of the company’s portfolio in the United States. Ajit Puri, MD, conducted the initial procedure with the Numen device at UMass Memorial Hospital in Worcester, Massachusetts.
“The Numen coils are extremely soft and take the shape of the anatomy very well,” commented Dr. Puri in the company’s press release. “The reliability from shape to detachment is exactly what we are looking for when choosing a coil.”
Additionally, Rapid Medical advised it now has an exclusive distribution agreement with MicroPort NeuroTech, a subsidiary of MicroPort Scientific Corporation. MicroPort’s global presence offers nearly 300 medical solutions to patients in more than 80 countries.
According to the company, the Numen coil embolization system showed excellent results in a 350-patient, prospective head-to-head study against a market-leading coil. The study, “Endovascular Aneurysm Treatment with the Numen Coil Embolization System: A Prospective Randomized Controlled Open-Label Multicenter Noninferiority Trial in China,” was published by Rui Zhao, MD, et al in World Neurosurgery (2022;160:323-e32).
In the study, the Nume coil demonstrated 91.2% successful long-term occlusion at 6 months and comparable mortality and serious adverse events. These results are particularly noteworthy because the Numen coils are generally longer and may need fewer coils to achieve the same packing density, stated Rapid Medical.
