Real-World Data Support Longer Time Window for Stent Retriever Thrombectomy After Stroke

July 26, 2018—The Society of NeuroInterventional Surgery (SNIS) announced that a new study shows promising real-world outcomes for patients treated by stent retriever thrombectomy 6 hours after experiencing an acute ischemic stroke. The study was presented at the SNIS 15th Annual Meeting held July 23–26 in San Francisco, California.

According to SNIS, the analysis of the combined NASA and TRACK registries evaluated the real-world outcomes of patients who receive treatment 6 hours after experiencing a stroke, demonstrating that results similar to those from randomized trials can be replicated in everyday practice.

As reported by SNIS, the study analyzed 830 patients with acute ischemic stroke from the two large real-world clinical registries. Of this group, 32.7% (271 patients) underwent thrombectomy 6 hours after stroke onset. Both groups of patients were treated with similar thrombectomy approaches using the Solitaire (Medtronic) or Trevo (Stryker) stent retrievers.

The rates of successful recanalization were 79.4% when treated between 0 and 6 hours after a stroke, 75.6% between 6 and 16 hours, and 85% between 16 and 24 hours.

Study investigator Maxim Mokin, MD, commented in the SNIS announcement, “The study’s results are promising because it shows us that a wider range of patients are eligible for endovascular therapy. Patients who may not fit the criteria of randomized clinical trials or current guidelines can still experience positive outcomes with a thrombectomy.”
