Roxwood Medical's CenterCross/MultiCross Devices Studied to Cross Peripheral CTOs

January 20, 2016—In EuroIntervention, Shwan Jalal, MD, et al published findings from an evaluation of the effectiveness and safety of CenterCross/MultiCross devices (Roxwood Medical, Inc.) to facilitate crossing of chronic total occlusions (CTOs) in peripheral arteries (2016;11:1063–1069). This single-center study included 53 consecutive patients who were not amenable to initial attempts at crossing using standard guidewires.

As summarized in EuroIntervention, the patients underwent an attempt to recanalize chronically occluded infrainguinal peripheral arteries using the MultiCross/CenterCross devices. The primary endpoint was the ability to advance the guidewire beyond the CTO lesions with the use of these devices. Safety endpoints were freedom from bleeding, distal embolization and vessel perforation, dissection, or need for emergent surgical intervention.

The investigators reported that lesions at the popliteal artery and below were the most commonly treated (89% of total lesions treated). CTO lesions were crossed successfully in 92.4% of the cases within a relatively short time (5.5 ± 3.5 min). There was no bleeding, dissection, or need for emergent surgery, and 98.1% and 96.2% of the patients were free from distal embolization and perforations, respectively.

This study demonstrated that the MultiCross and CenterCross devices were effective and safe for recanalization of peripheral CTO lesions that were not amenable to conventional guidewires. Further study is required to define the role of these novel devices in the treatment of complex lesions, particularly CTOs in patients with peripheral artery disease, concluded the investigators in EuroIntervention.

In December 2014, Roxwood Medical announced the United States launch of the CenterCross catheter, which was cleared by the US Food and Drug Administration for use in the coronary and peripheral vasculature. The CenterCross catheter joined the MultiCross catheter platform in Roxwood Medical’s portfolio of devices for treatment of blockages in arteries.
