SIR Names Dr. Robert J. Lewandowski as President for 2024-2025

March 26, 2024—The Society of Interventional Radiology (SIR) announced that Robert J. Lewandowski, MD, assumed the office of president of the society for the 2024-2025 term. Dr. Lewandowski is an interventional radiologist (IR) and professor at Northwestern Medicine Feinberg School of Medicine in Chicago, Illinois.

“Throughout the last 50 years, SIR has enabled the specialty to grow in an evolving health care landscape, providing interventional radiologists with the education, resources, and support required for members to thrive,” commented Dr. Lewandowski in the society’s press release. “As we look forward, SIR remains committed to fostering health care innovations that improve patients’ lives worldwide.”

The announcement was made at SIR 2024, the society’s annual scientific meeting held March 23-28 in Salt Lake City, Utah.

Additional incoming officers of SIR’s 2024-2025 Board of Directors were announced at the annual meeting. SIR President-elect is Robert A. Lookstein, MD, of Mount Sinai Health System and Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai in New York, New York, and the newly appointed Secretary is Saher S. Sabri, MD, from MedStar Georgetown University Hospital in Washington, DC. SIR Immediate Past President is Alda L. Tam, MD, from The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, Texas.

Kelvin Hong, MD, and Nishita Kothary, MD, were each named as Director, at-large, on the SIR Board of Directors.

The SIR and SIR Foundation Steering Council’s appointments include Sun-Ho Ahn, MD, as Education Division Councilor and Paula Novelli, MD, to the 2024–2030 Annual Meeting Program Committee. Clinical Specialty Council appointments include Joseph J. Gemmete, MD, as Neurointerventional Radiology Council Vice Chair; Gulraiz Chaudry, MD, as Pediatric IR Vice Chair; and Andrew Gunn, MD, as Renal and GU Council Vice Chair.

SIR Foundation also appointed the following members to its Board of Directors: Clifford R. Weiss, MD, Vice Chair; Shellie C. Josephs, MD, Secretary; Nadine Abi-Jaoudeh, MD, Clinical Trials and Registries Division Chair; Amy C. Taylor, MD, Development Division Chair; Dania Daye, MD, Research Education and Outreach Division Chair.

Finally, SIR inducted 34 new Fellows during the annual scientific meeting. This honor, achieved by only 15% of eligible SIR members, is bestowed on those who have demonstrated excellence in interventional radiology through research and published works, teaching, and leadership within the field, along with contributions and involvement within the society.
