Surmodics’ Sublime Radial Access Microcatheter Used in First Procedures

April 19, 2023—Surmodics, Inc. announced the first procedures with the company’s Sublime radial access microcatheter, which is in limited market evaluation. Ankur Lodha of Lafayette, Louisiana, and Pradeep Nair of Houma, Louisiana, who are interventional cardiologists at the Cardiovascular Institute of the South, were the first physicians to use the Sublime device.

“For peripheral as well as coronary interventions, radial access is safer than femoral access and much preferred by patients,” commented Dr. Lodha in Surmodics’ press release. “I’m pleased to report that the Sublime microcatheter performed exceptionally well during our first uses of the device in treating peripheral arterial disease.”

Dr. Nair added, “The lack of long-length, high-performance catheters for peripheral procedures has slowed adoption of radial access for treatment of lower extremity artery disease. Sublime microcatheters will fill a major gap in the peripheral intervention toolkit, including for procedures from access sites other than the wrist.”

According to Surmodics, the full suite of the Sublime portfolio, which will include 0.014-, 0.018-, and 0.035-inch high-performance peripheral microcatheters, will be launched in FY 2024.

The Sublime microcatheters will be available in five lengths from 65 to 200 cm; will be compatible with 0.014-, 0.018-, and 0.035-inch guidewires; and will be offered in straight or angled tip configurations. Additionally, the 0.014- and 0.018-inch microcatheters can be telescoped through the 0.035-inch Sublime microcatheter to provide additional back-up support when navigating extreme tortuosity or heavily stenosed lesions.

The devices feature Surmodics’ Pristyne hydrophilic coating for lubricity that optimizes device trackability through vessel tortuosity. Also, dual stainless steel locked-braid layers optimize torque control, push transmission, and deliverability to distal target lesions, noted the company.
