SVIN Publishes Recommendations for Centers Providing Endovascular Acute Stroke Therapy

March 8, 2016—The Society for Vascular and Interventional Neurology (SVIN) announced that their report, “Mechanical Thrombectomy-Ready Comprehensive Stroke Center Requirements and Endovascular Stroke Systems of Care: Recommendations from the Endovascular Stroke Standards Committee of the SVIN,” has been published online in Interventional Neurology

The recommendations, developed by SVIN’s Endovascular Stroke Standards Committee, are designed to help standardize the delivery of safe, effective, and timely stoke care for patients with sudden stroke symptoms (acute stroke).

According to SVIN, the document builds on five landmark, multicenter, prospective, randomized, open-label, blinded endpoint clinical trials that have recently demonstrated significant clinical benefit of endovascular therapy with mechanical thrombectomy in acute ischemic stroke (AIS) patients presenting with proximal intracranial large vessel occlusions. The recommendations provide guidance on implementation of the new standard of care for stroke patients in the United States.

SVIN President Raul Nogeuira, MD, co-author of the report, commented in the society’s announcement, “Our hope is that these recommendations will provide new guidelines for acute stroke therapy.” Dr. Nogeuria added, “Our society appointed an expert writing committee to summarize this new evidence and make recommendations on how these data should guide emergency endovascular therapy for AIS patients. As we enter a new era of stroke care, we believe these recommendations will contribute to improved outcomes for AIS patients.”
