SVS Elects New Leadership for 2017–2018

June 20, 2017—The Society for Vascular Surgery (SVS) announced the election of the 2017–2018 leadership at the business meeting held during the SVS Vascular Annual Meeting earlier this month in San Diego, California.

The SVS President for 2017–2018 is R. Clement Darling, III, MD, who served as President-Elect during the past year and has been active in the leadership of the society for more than 26 years. During that time, he has served on numerous SVS committees, on the Board of Directors, and on the Executive Committee. Dr. Darling is President of The Vascular Group and Chief of the Division of Vascular Surgery at Albany Medical Center Hospital in Albany, New York.

Michel S. Makaroun, MD, will become President-Elect after serving as SVS Vice President during the past year. From 2013–2016, he was secretary of SVS. He is Professor of Surgery and Clinical and Translational Science at the University of Pittsburgh in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

Kim J. Hodgson, MD, was elected as Vice President and has served three terms as Treasurer for the SVS. He is Chair of the Division of Vascular Surgery at Southern Illinois University School of Medicine in Springfield, Illinois.

Ronald Fairman, MD, will become Chair of the SVS Foundation after serving the past year as the immediate Past-President of the SVS. Dr. Fairman will oversee the foundation’s competitive, peer-reviewed, grant-making initiatives, which are made possible by contributions from members, medical societies, and corporations. Dr. Fairman is Chief of Vascular Surgery and Endovascular Therapy at the University of Pennsylvania’s Penn Medicine in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

Samuel R. Money, MD, will be the Treasurer of SVS. He is Professor of Surgery at the College of Medicine, Mayo Clinic in Phoenix, Arizona.

Ali AbuRahma, MD, will continue in his role as the society's Secretary. Dr. AbuRahma is Professor of Surgery, Chief of Vascular and Endovascular Surgery, and Director of the Vascular Surgery Fellowship and Integrated Residency Programs at West Virginia University in Charleston, West Virginia.
