Terumo Aortic Receives King’s Award for Innovation for Custom Solutions Program

May 6, 2024—Terumo Aortic announced that it received the King’s Award for Enterprise in the Innovation category for its global custom solutions program.

The award represents the highest honor for businesses and individuals in the United Kingdom in recognition of outstanding achievements in the fields of innovation, international trade, and sustainable development, noted the company. Terumo Aortic has previously received eight Queen’s Awards.

According to Terumo Aortic, its custom solutions program is a collaborative process enabling the creation of unique devices for treating complex aortic disease in patients for whom no viable off-the-shelf product is commercially available.

The program is designed specifically for dedicated custom device engineers and clinical case planners to work closely with clinicians and clinical specialists on a case-by-case basis to deliver an optimal product solution for the treatment of individual patient anatomy.

The company noted that a recent advancement in the program is the evolution of a digital, cloud-based system to manage all custom product requests for patients. In addition to managing the details for each case and the uploading of CT scans by clinicians, the system enables the creation of a three-dimensional–printed anatomic model of the patient’s anatomy that allows clinicians to perform hands-on practice deployments to evaluate the functionality and fit of the product before the actual procedure.

The digital multidisciplinary approach combining clinical and technical experience ensures that all aspects of the patient’s condition and medical history, unique requirements (especially if complex aortic pathology), and functional limitations are considered throughout the process, stated the company.

“We are honored to have been recognized with this highly prestigious award for our global custom solutions program,” commented Erik Pomp, President and CEO of Terumo Aortic, in the press release. “The digital capabilities have significantly elevated the level of service provided to clinicians, completely transforming the way the team works to deliver custom solutions more efficiently, forging closer working relationships with customers, and establishing a treatment plan for the individual patient.”

The company’s press release advised that the availability of the custom solutions program is subject to local regulatory approval. Custom-made devices are specifically made in accordance with a written prescription of any person authorized by national law by virtue of that person’s professional qualifications, which gives (1) specific design characteristics provided under that person’s responsibility and (2) is intended for the sole use of a particular patient exclusively to meet their individual conditions and needs.

Custom-made devices are not available in the United States, stated Terumo Aortic.
