Terumo Aortic’s Thoraflex Hybrid Device for Complex Aortic Arch Procedures to Be Covered Under New MS-DRG

September 18, 2025—Terumo Aortic announced that a new Medicare Severity Diagnosis-Related Group (MS-DRG) for complex aortic arch procedures has been established by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) that will take effect on October 1, 2025.

According to Terumo Aortic, this milestone marks an advancement for hospitals treating patients with the company’s Thoraflex Hybrid device in frozen elephant trunk (FET) procedures. In April 2022, the company announced FDA approval of the device for FET.

The company noted that for the last 3 years, hospitals using the Thoraflex Hybrid device have benefited from a New Technology Add-On Payment (NTAP), first granted by CMS in 2021. The NTAP helped offset the high costs of performing complex open aortic procedures.

Terumo Aortic advised it petitioned CMS for a permanent reimbursement framework that fully recognizes the real-world costs of developing and delivering this life-saving care.

After CMS’s own analysis of Medicare claims data, it was concluded that a new DRG was needed to accurately reflect the resource demands and clinical complexity of these hybrid surgical-endovascular procedures, noted the company’s press release.
