UK NICE Guidance Addresses Radiofrequency Denervation for Osteoarthritic Knee Pain
June 28, 2023—The United Kingdom’s National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) issued guidance on evidence-based recommendations for radiofrequency denervation for osteoarthritic knee pain. The interventional procedures guidance, IPG767, is available on the NICE website.
The NICE guidance states, “There is good evidence to show that this procedure relieves pain in the short term. There are no major safety concerns, and the complications, including numbness, are well recognized.”
According to the guidance, radiofrequency denervation for osteoarthritic knee pain may be used if standard arrangements are in place for clinical governance, consent, and audit. The procedure should only be done by clinicians with specific training and experience in the procedure. For auditing the outcomes of this procedure, the main efficacy and safety outcomes identified in the guidance can be entered into NICE’s interventional procedure outcomes audit tool (for use at local discretion).
