Vascular Solutions Launches the OptiSeal Valved Peelable Introducer, Acquires Zerusa

January 27, 2011—Vascular Solutions, Inc. (Minneapolis, MN) announced the United States launch of the OptiSeal valved peelable introducer sheath, which is intended for the percutaneous insertion of leads or catheters in the venous system.

According to the company, each OptiSeal system contains a 13-cm peel-away valved introducer sheath with a locking dilator, a 60-cm–long, 0.035-inch guidewire, an 18-gauge needle, and a 12-cc syringe. OptiSeal introducers are available in seven color-coded sizes from 6 to 12 F. The sheath is constructed from polytetrafluoroethylene, with a valve for optimal insertion and sealing that preserves the integrity of the lead or catheter. The locking hub prevents separation of the sheath and dilator during insertion into the vessel, and a smooth sheath-to-dilator transition provides atraumatic vessel access. The OptiSeal system is designed to reduce the risk of air embolism as well as limit the clinician's exposure to blood-borne pathogens. 


Vascular Solutions also announced that it has acquired the assets of Zerusa Limited (Galway, Ireland), manufacturer of the Guardian hemostasis valves, for €3.15 million. The Guardian hemostasis valves are designed to maintain hemostasis during interventional catheterization procedures through a sealing system that allows simple introduction and removal of interventional devices while providing the option to lock guidewires in place.

Vascular Solutions has been selling the Guardian hemostasis valves in the United States under an exclusive distribution relationship with Zerusa since 2007. In international markets, Zerusa has been selling the Guardian hemostasis valves through a network of independent distributors. Effective immediately, international sales of the Guardian products will be conducted by Vascular Solutions' existing international distribution network. Sales in the United States will continue to be made through Vascular Solutions' direct sales force.
