Stroke is a major public health concern, with more than 750,000 incidents of stroke occurring each year in the United States.1-4 It is the third leading cause of death after heart disease and cancer, and it is the leading neurologic cause of long-term disability.5 Approximately 30% of strokes are caused by carotid artery occlusive disease.6 When patients with significant carotid artery occlusive disease develop symptoms, it is usually the result of embolization from the embolic site.
