Borvo’s EVAC System Studied to Treat Chronic Subdural Hematoma
July 14, 2025—Borvo Medical, a portfolio company of NeuroTechnology Investors, announced findings for the company’s FDA-cleared endoport vacuum-assisted collection (EVAC) system for the treatment of chronic subdural hematomas (SDHs).
Borvo Medical reported a 100% success rate in the initial 25 patients with SDH treated with middle meningeal artery (MMA) embolization immediately preceded or followed by a hematoma evacuation with the Borvo EVAC system. The patients were treated at five medical centers: the University of Virginia in Charlottesville, Virginia; Atlantic Health System in Morristown, New Jersey; JFK University Medical Center in Edison, New Jersey; Mount Sinai Health System in New York, New York; and St. Luke's Health System in Boise, Idaho.
According to the company, the Borvo EVAC system is intended to address the needs of an aging population and individual patients requiring SDH drainage because of head injuries and other causes.
The company stated that the Borvo EVAC system is designed to reduce artifacts on postoperative CT scans and enable clear, reliable follow-up imaging for medical teams treating SDH. Additionally, it is MR-compatible, providing a broad range of imaging and monitoring options without performance interference. The company announced FDA 510(k) clearance for the EVAC system in October 2024.
Ryan Kellogg, MD, associate professor of neurosurgery at the University of Virginia, and Ron Benitez, MD, chief of endovascular neurosurgery at Atlantic Health System, discussed the EVAC device in the company’s press release.
“The Borvo EVAC system has added a new level of safety and efficiency to how we treat chronic subdural hematomas,” commented Dr. Kellogg. “In these initial cases performed at our facility, we’ve seen excellent outcomes using EVAC in conjunction with MMA embolization. The three-dimensional printed titanium technology allows for improved intraoperative imaging in the angio suite, an advantage over the stainless-steel devices.”
Dr. Benitez added, “The ability to use the Borvo EVAC on both sides (bilateral) in a single session has been a game-changer for our busy practice. It’s efficient, intuitive, and has delivered consistent results for our patients with bilateral or complex chronic subdurals. This EVAC system is advancing what’s possible in neurosurgical care.”
