ESVS Seeks Candidates for President
April 4, 2023—The European Society for Vascular Surgery (ESVS) announced a call for candidates for the position of ESVS President.
The society welcomes applications from members who believe they could be a driving force in the future of the organization. A cover letter with a curriculum vitae should be submitted to info@esvs.org before June 1, 2023. Selected candidates will be invited to present their applications during the onsite ESVS Council Meeting on September 26 in Belfast, Northern Ireland, United Kingdom, when votes will be cast.
The ESVS President is elected to a 3-year term that begins at the close of the annual meeting with 1 year as Deputy President-Elect, 1 year as President-Elect, and the final year (2025-2026) as ESVS President.
The successful candidate is expected to be engaged with the society activities from the beginning of the term as Deputy President-Elect and to represent ESVS in relevant forums.
According to the society, the ESVS President plays a key role in running and organizing the society and in pursuing the advancement and development of the ESVS and vascular surgery as a whole. The President also has a legal responsibility as a Charity Trustee.
As summarized by ESVS, the main responsibilities of President are:
- Lead the Annual General Meeting, Council, and Executive Committee meetings in coordination with the Secretary General, including preparation of the agenda, review of content and minutes, and chairing the meetings
- Lead the strategic direction of the ESVS
- Represent ESVS externally
At the annual meeting, the ESVS President decides the scientific topics and many key aspects that include the following:
- In collaboration with the Program Committee Chair and Secretary General, the President decides which joint sessions, common sessions with the society of the host nation, and ESVS symposia will take place. The organization of each of these sessions and symposia can be delegated to Program Committee members so that work will be equally divided and the President can keep an overall view.
- The President needs to keep apprised of industry requirements, which need to be respected whenever possible.
- The President proposes the names for the Volodos and Powell lectures.
- With the Secretary General, Treasurerand the ESVS office, the President makes budget decisions and supervises the budget during the regular budget calls set by the ESVS office. The President can be asked for help for reaching out to potential Annual Meeting sponsors where the ESVS office or professional congress organizer have difficulties.
- The education and training program, adjunct to the meeting, is organized by the ESVS Academy Chair in connection with the Secretary General and Executive Committee.
As President, the successful candidate will sit on the following committees:
- Executive Committee
- Industry Relations and Business Development Committee
- Annual Meeting Program Committee and Budget team
- Masterclass Program Committee (as President-Elect, will chair the committee)
ESVS advised that being part of these committees requires attending regular online meetings (approximately one per month per committee) plus onsite meetings when required. In addition, the ESVS President can be asked to represent the society at related meetings (eg, Charing Cross Symposium, VEITHsymposium, the Society for Vascular Society annual meeting, and other national society meetings).
