Penumbra Launches SwiftSet Coil for Adaptive Neurovascular Embolization

October 9, 2025—Penumbra announced the commercial launch of the SwiftSet coil, a complex embolization coil engineered to provide adaptive vessel wall apposition and smooth, controlled deployment for dense occlusion in small and tortuous neurovascular anatomies.

According to Penumbra, SwiftSet expands the procedural versatility of its Swift coil system, allowing physicians to anchor with the SwiftSet coil and subsequently fill with the system’s SwiftPac coils.

SwiftPac coils are designed to act like soft space-seeking “liquid metal” that conforms to the target vessel for dense packing; its two-dimensional sinusoidal shape is designed to help the coil break effortlessly to seek empty space, explained Penumbra.

The combined devices form a platform intended for use in a range of neurovascular applications, including intracranial aneurysms, arteriovenous malformations, and arteriovenous fistulae.

“SwiftSet allows for efficient, controllable occlusion due to its design to begin anchoring in a vessel upon deployment,” commented Benjamin Yim, MD, in the company’s press release.

Dr. Yim, a dual-trained neurosurgeon with John Muir Medical Center in Walnut Creek, California, continued, “Our early experience shows that deploying and setting this Swift coil in a targeted area of the vessel supports both precision and stability as embolization progresses.”

Penumbra stated that the SwiftSet includes a 0.135-inch primary diameter coil designed for volume and softness, conforming naturally to the vessel to promote secure occlusion. The coil is available in size configurations ranging from 2 to 30 cm in length and 1 to 5 mm in diameter. Additionally, it is compatible with 0.0165-inch minimum inner-diameter microcatheters.

The companion SwiftPac coils are designed for “space-seeking” behavior, acting like soft, flowable coils to densely pack the vessel lumen. SwiftPac coils have a softness value of 0.093 and are available in expanded 20- and 25-cm lengths to accommodate a variety of vessel sizes, noted Penumbra.
