Penumbra’s Red 72 Silver Label Reperfusion Catheters Receive CE Mark Approval for Acute Ischemic Stroke

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • CE Mark approval was granted for Penumbra’s Red 72 Silver Label and Red 72 Silver Label with SendIt technology reperfusion catheters for acute ischemic stroke.
  • The devices are designed for direct aspiration in patients with LVOs and incorporate features intended to facilitate catheter delivery.
  • The catheters are available individually or packaged with Penumbra's Thunderbolt CAVT platform.

June 30, 2026—Penumbra Inc. announced it has received CE Mark approval for its Red 72 Silver Label and Red 72 Silver Label with SendIt technology.

According to Penumbra, the Red 72 Silver Label devices are reperfusion catheters designed for direct aspiration to treat acute ischemic stroke.

Penumbra stated that Red 72 Silver Label features a 0.072-inch (1.83-mm) lumen and a 0.085-inch (2.16-mm) outer diameter with a 132-cm length to reach target vessels. The Red 72 Silver Label with SendIt technology is designed to minimize the ledge effect, simplify preparation, and ease delivery in large vessel occlusions (LVOs).

As reported in the company’s press release, Red 72 Silver Label was developed for speed and ease of navigation. It features blended transition zones to accommodate the natural anatomy of the brain. The device was adapted from Penumbra’s Red 43 and Red 62 catheters.

Red 72 Silver Label was released in the United States in April 2025.

Donald Frei, MD, a neurointerventional radiologist at Swedish Medical Center in Denver, Colorado, commented on his experience with the device in Penumbra’s press release.

“Red 72 Silver Label has significantly changed our practice as it pertains to treating patients with LVO,” stated Dr. Frei. “The refined engineering is evident as the catheter tracks distally with ease and maintains lumen diameter during aspiration. The catheter construction is state of the art, allowing for faster and safer recanalization of stroke patients with LVO. It is fantastic that our European counterparts now have access to the latest catheter technology.

Penumbra stated that the devices are available as separate catheters or prepackaged with Penumbra’s Thunderbolt device, which features the company’s computer assisted vacuum thrombectomy (CAVT) platform for modulated aspiration in stroke care. Penumbra recently announced CE Mark approval for the Thunderbolt CAVT device.
