Philips SmartCT for Stroke Imaging Launched in Europe
June 3, 2025—Royal Philips announced CE Mark approval for its latest SmartCT image reconstruction solution designed to support decision-making in the treatment of stroke and other neurovascular conditions. SmartCT is now available across Europe; it has been available in Japan and Canada, noted the company.
According to the company, the latest-generation SmartCT is built for the Philips Azurion neuro biplane system. It is designed to accelerate three-dimensional imaging, giving neurointerventionalists real-time views of brain tissue, blood vessels, and interventional devices directly in the angio suite.
By removing the need to transfer patients for separate CT imaging, SmartCT enables a streamlined workflow that reduces procedural complexity and supports timely intervention, thereby enabling physicians to personalize therapy and reduce uncertainty during time-critical procedures like mechanical thrombectomy, stated Philips.
Shuta Aketa, MD, and Junji Fukumori, MD, commented on the SmartCT in the company’s press release. Dr. Aketa is Chief of Neurovascular Intervention and Dr. Fukumori is Director of the Stroke Center at the Osaka International Medical & Science Center in Osaka, Japan.
“The image quality of the helical cone-beam CT is impressive—it’s almost like a conventional CT scan,” stated Dr. Aketa. “This is ideal for emergency procedures, as the image quality meets our needs and helps us work more efficiently.”
Dr. Fukumori added, “Compared to other vendors, Philips SmartCT technology allows for more confident and safe treatment of complex cases.”
Philips advised it will showcase SmartCT at the LINNC Paris 2025 conference held June 2-4 in Paris, France.
