Vena MicroAngioscope System Used in First Commercial Cases in the United States

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • Vena Medical’s Vena MicroAngioscope system was used in the first commercial cases in the United States.
  • The direct intravascular imaging system was launched in a limited market release after gaining FDA clearance in February 2026.
  • Neurosurgeons Peter Kan, MD, and Chris Young, MD, from the University of Texas Medical Branch led the initial cases, beginning with a carotid artery stenting procedure.

April 28, 2026—Vena Medical, a Kitchener, Canada—based developer of direct intravascular imaging systems, announced completion of the first commercial cases in the United States with the Vena MicroAngioscope system.

The company stated that the Vena MicroAngioscope system uses a small camera to provide physicians with a live, full-color view from inside the vasculature. The system allows physicians to directly image complex lesions and tailor treatment decisions, such as stent choice and stent-vessel interaction, in real time.

According to the company, the limited market release of the MicroAngioscope in the United States comes after Vena Medical’s recently announced FDA 510(k) clearance announcement and the opening of its manufacturing center of excellence in Kitchener.

The initial procedures were led by Peter Kan, MD, Professor and Chair of Neurosurgery at the University of Texas Medical Branch (UTMB), and Chris Young, MD, Assistant Professor of Neurosurgery at UTMB in Galveston, Texas.

Vena Medical noted that UTMB is the first care institution in the United States to commercially adopt the Vena MicroAngioscope system, with the UTMB Health team completing seven cases using the technology, beginning with a carotid artery stenting procedure, noted the company.

“Our team recently completed the first United States commercial procedures utilizing this direct-imaging system,” commented Dr. Kan in the Vena Medical press release. “The device provides real-time, intravascular color visualization, which we used to directly assess the target lesions and observe the placement of the stents during the interventions.”

Vena Medical has partnered with Dr. Kan and the UTMB team on investigational research, including four peer-reviewed publications. The first-in-human clinical data with the Vena MicroAngioscope system was recently published by Robert Fahed, MD, et al in Stroke.
