Volcano to Supply IVUS Technology for Covidien's Plaque Excision Systems

May 4, 2011—Volcano Corporation (San Diego, CA) announced the signing of a supply agreement with Covidien (Mansfield, MA) under which Volcano will supply its intravascular ultrasound (IVUS) technology for use with Covidien's plaque excision systems. The atherectomy devices will utilize the digital IVUS transducer that is incorporated in Volcano's EagleEye catheter product line and will be capable of running on Volcano's systems.

Volcano stated that Covidien's SilverHawk and TurboHawk directional atherectomy catheters are designed to direct the therapy specifically to the diseased portion of the vessel while avoiding healthy portions of the vessel. The latest generation of TurboHawk plaque excision catheters are designed to remove all plaque morphologies from diseased arteries, including calcified lesions.
