IASIOS Designates First Center of Excellence in Interventional Oncology

July 16, 2024—The International Accreditation System for Interventional Oncology Services (IASIOS) recently announced that Hôpitaux Universitaires de Strasbourg in Strasbourg, France, is the first facility to achieve the organization’s Center of Excellence status. The designation recognizes the hospital’s commitment to the highest standards of patient service and quality of care in interventional oncology (IO), noted the press release.

IASIOS, based in Vienna, Austria, is a global accreditation system for IO that was launched in April 2021.

As a blueprint for the accreditation system, IASIOS used the “Standards of Quality Assurance in Interventional Oncology” published by the Cardiovascular and Interventional Radiological Society of Europe and supported by 42 national and international societies, including the European Cancer Association.

The Hôpitaux Universitaires de Strasbourg was an early adopter of the IASIOS program and became the second facility in the world to achieve IASIOS accreditation. To attain the Center of Excellence seal required them to meet rigorous international standards that exceed the core criteria for IO services, including quality patient care, facility development, and the advancement of IO as a discipline, stated IASIOS.

Professor Afshin Gangi, MD, is Chairman of Radiology and Nuclear Medicine at the Hôpitaux Universitaires de Strasbourg.

“Through IASIOS, we were able to assess our department from the top down and recognize our strengths and weaknesses,” commented Prof. Gangi in the IASIOS press release. “This deep analysis resulted in a comprehensive improvement of patient services and safety and allowed us to provide standardized yet personalized treatment to each of our patients. I would like to highlight the contributions of our entire team—the interventional radiologists, nurses, radiographers, supervisors, quality control team, secretaries, and hygiene team—toward achieving and upholding the highest standards of care in IO.”
